The un-poisonable ones
Alot can be said for the un-poisonable relationships we have in our lives, whether it be with friends, family or partners. As I approached 52, I was thinking about the 2-3 people, I have met everywhere I have lived that become a part of life’s journey forever. I have spent time living in Whangārei Heads, Karitane, Australia in the 90s, the islands, Auckland and now back to Australia. There are always two or three people that show up, and remain lifelong friends.
I met up with a mate from the islands, for a few days. It was her birthday on the 15th of August and mine the 10th. She said around May, we should catch up somewhere and koka (muck around) like the islands. So we organized it. In the islands, we would catch up every Friday and sometimes during the week for coffee. This happened for 3 years. When you put in that time with people, you build trust and respect with each other. That is how this kind of friendship has lasted.
It's not like at 52yro I have no life experience about friendships. What I have noticed is despite betrayals that cut deep into the core, some of which led to some next level experiences, and you feel a sense of grief and loss, in balance, Io has sent angels, friends, people, that to this day are still in my life. I could pick up the phone, call them and the next day we would be having lunch or dinner, a catch up. Like it was yesterday. Friendships spanning back to high school. Not crowds, not a group, but 2 or 3 people, from a different time or place.
These are the people who are able to discern the vomit that is purged out into the atmosphere, that seeks to discredit, smear or isolate one from community. These are the ones, that know, the chances are if I was to ever be upset about something, it didn’t happen for no reason or out of thin air. These are the ones who know where our values lay, what is important to us, and who is important to us. These are your community, whether they are spread across the globe, or found in one small town, village, or big city. Io always sends people who know you, and who will always love you. My Uncle was also one of those people. I miss his company, and presence but feel blessed to have known him, learnt from him and to be given a love that I can carry for the rest of my life.
Life-long friends are out there, for everyone. They are separated from the transient ones, because they know you and have got you. Shout out to the un-poisonable ones, may your lives be blessed with love, happiness and prosperity always, with those you love.
